Yucatán Peninsula- Puerta al Mundo Maya

General Information

This peninsula of Central America is the gateway to the Land of the Maya - one of the most beautiful landscapes of Mexico.
Supposedly the name Yucatán came from a misunderstanding between the natives and Spaniards. The Spaniards would asked the indigenous Mayans, what is the name of your country- the Mayans would reply to the question with "Yuk ak Katan". This means "I do not understand your language"- thus became the name of the peninsula

Geography

The peninsula separates the Gulf of Mexico from the Caribbean Sea. In the east off the coast- lies the largest island of Mexico, Cozumel.

The Mexican region of Yucatán is politically divided into three states - Campeche, Quintana Roo and Yucatán. The south of the peninsula belongs to Belize and Guatemala.

The state of Yucatán has approximately 1.7 million inhabitants and has an area of 14,827 sq miles. The capital Mérida, also called "White City", is located in the Northwest region and is one of the oldest towns in Mexico.
Mexican Geography
Geographically as a whole, the state is extremely flat with little or no physical variation. Which explains the fact that the island consists of porous limestone, through which rainwater seeps. Also, this is why the territory has the largest underground river system in the world.

Because of this geological feature / Yucatán property, there are numerous Cenotes to find in the peninsula. There are natural water reservoirs, where you can dive or snorkel and the fresh water is so clear that you can see over 300 feet deep - a mecca for cave divers! Only after about 40 feet there is salt water which is due to the cenotes opening a connection to the sea.

Culture

Before the arrival of the Spanish, Yucatán was the center of the Mayan Civilzation. Even today, there are numerous well-preserved cultural buildings, such as Chichén Itzá, Uxmal, Palenque, Edzná and Tulúm – which is a MUST SEE .

The official language is Spanish, but some of the people speak Mayan. But don't worry, English is spoken in all tourist regions.

Tulum Beach

Many restaurants on the Yucatán Peninsula serve traditional cuisine. Dishes such as Poc Chuc (marinated pork loin), Cochinita pibil (stewed pork in banana leaves), Papadzules (tortillas filled with hard-boiled eggs in a pumpkin seed sauce) and Sopa de Lima (chicken broth with a sweet lemon juice) are just a few you should try.

Whether swimming, sun bathing or cultura sites is your thing - come experience Playa! Dream beaches of the 80 mile long Riviera Maya, picturesque colonial villages, archaeological sites, and lastly the warm friendliness of the people invite you to Playa to See, Discover and Experience.
