The term Salsa comes from the Spanish word "sauce" and refers to a Latin-American music and dance style.
Unlike frequently assumed, salsa is more than just a mix of different Caribbean rhythms and styles of music. The Latin Americans living in New York's barrio during the 1960's, came from Puerto Rico, Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Panama and as this group of people combined the sounds and dances of their home countries with each other, the salsa was created and was an essential part of cultural identity among young Latinos. Initially the hot rhythms spread rapidly thru America and then later throughout the world.
As exciting and vibrant music, the salsa is constantly evolving. The latest advances are what makes the salsa- including rap, techno, merengue and reggaeton
